The Right Ways to Work With an Uncooperative Pupil

When students are non-responsive or they do respond and seem to be to be uncooperative, it is often done so from a reactive state of mind. From my experience working with students, there have been times when a student has looked at their cumulative grade or feedback for an job and had a reactive response. They might have thought that the grade was unjust, they "worked hard" on the assignment and deserved a perfect rating, or there can be any other volume of reasons. Those students will either remain silent or finally reach out when their frustration has built up.

Those reactions may be linked with beliefs that were built after unrealistic objectives. For example, students may believe an amount of effort exerted on their part should equate to a certain grade. That is certainly understandable that students could have a response and possibly with strong emotions; however, it is not necessarily appropriate to approach a trainer in an aggressive and uncooperative demeanor. That acts no purpose and works against them as they will not be well prepared to receive helpful feedback and constructive criticism. In addition, if communication is too aggressive it could become a student code of perform violation.

There are different types of uncooperative students. At this time there is the shy pupil who may feel anxious by their instructor, there might be a type a college student who feels fully in charge of their education and doesn't prefer some other interactions with their instructor, and then there are students who consider they understand what is best and won't communicate unless their instructor deviates from that expectation.
